Discover the Alhambra

The Alhambra, a stunning palace and fortress complex situated in Granada, Spain, is one of the most remarkable examples of Moorish architecture in the world. Originally built in 889 AD on the ruins of an ancient Roman fortress, the site was later transformed into a majestic royal palace in the mid-13th century by the Nasrid dynasty. The name ‘Alhambra’ derives from the Arabic word ‘al-qal‘at al-hamra’, meaning ‘the red fortress’, which refers to the reddish hue of its buildings, especially at sunset.

Visitors to the Alhambra are greeted by intricate tile work, detailed stucco decoration, and elegant arches that reflect the artistic brilliance of its creators. The complex is divided into several sections, including the Palace of the Nasrid Kings, known for its stunning courtyards and fountains, and the Generalife, the summer palace and gardens. The gardens provide a serene escape, showcasing beautifully landscaped areas that were designed to be in harmony with the surrounding nature.

One can easily spend hours wandering through the Alhambra’s history-laden corridors, soaking in the spectacular views of the sierras and the lush Albayzín neighbourhood below. The Mexuar Hall, Comares Palace, and the Hall of the Ambassadors feature magnificent Islamic art and craftsmanship, reflecting the cultural blend that characterises the area. The complex is not just a feast for the eyes; it also holds a deep historical significance, symbolising the coexistence of different cultures in Spain.

The Alhambra is a UNESCO World Heritage site, attracting millions of visitors each year. To ensure a meaningful experience, it’s advisable to book tickets in advance, as the number of daily visitors is limited. Guided tours are available, providing insights into the rich history and stories that make the Alhambra a treasure trove of knowledge.

Whether you are an architecture enthusiast, a history buff, or someone looking to soak in the cultural splendour of Spain, the Alhambra promises an unforgettable experience that captures the essence of its time and place. Visiting this iconic landmark will make your trip to Granada truly memorable.

Whenever you are remotely near Granada, this is a must visit.

These images were taken some years ago using the Canon 400D camera. lens was not recorded. I no longer own the 400D or any cameras from Canon. I decided to move on to some other adventurous companies.
