The Panasonic DC-S9 camera is a versatile mirrorless model designed for both photography enthusiasts and professionals (and amateurs). With a 24.2-megapixel Full Frame sensor, it delivers stunning image quality and dynamic range, allowing for vibrant colors and sharp details. The camera features advanced autofocus with 779 focus points, ensuring fast and accurate tracking, even in challenging conditions.
Its 5-axis (6.5 stops with Dual-IS 2) dual image stabilization is a standout feature, reducing camera shake for clearer handheld shots, especially in low light. The DC-S9 also offers 4K video recording, making it a great choice for videographers seeking high-resolution footage. It also incorporates the Open Gate mode allowing for more efficiency and possibilities for the content creator.
The camera's is robustly built, but is not dust, splash resistant. It is also not waterproof. A bit disappointing. The intuitive touchscreen interface enhances usability, while Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity allow for seamless sharing and remote control.
Battery life is impressive, being rated for 470 shots supporting extended shooting sessions without frequent recharges. With a wide range of compatible lenses and accessories, the Panasonic DC-S9 is a powerful tool for capturing stunning images, whether you're shooting landscapes or portraits. I would not recomment it for sport or fast moving subjects. There are better cameras out there for that.
Personally I had to add a grip to my S9 as it was always a hassle to hold without an integrated grip. I have the minimalist SmallRig grip fitted to mine and it really transformed the camera. I know the camera has a smaller profile without a grip but it makes it harder to keep hold of the camera when carrying it over a lengthy period.
It seems to be a great video camera, however I must admit I don't do video so I'm not really going to touch on that subject. What actually attracted me to this camera was the 64:25 (Xpan) and 2:1 aspect ratio available. I love these and have been using them quite a bit since I bought the camera.
It only offers 1 x SD storage slot. This might be a negative point for some users, especially those planning on doing a lot of video work but it doesn't bother me at all. I just purchase a large enough SD card to get me through a days's shooting.
One thing I was a little disappointed with and that is the lack of a BSI stacked sensor. This would have given better and faster sensor read-out. As it is, it is a BSI-CMOS sensor, giving excellent image quality. I can't complain really.
Complaint No 1
The one complaint I do have, and this isn't just about the S9, it's the little round wheel on the back of the camera that just turns whenever it wants to. Why Panasonic insist on this "thing" I don't know but I have over the years come to detest it. I turn it off whenever possible and ensure it doesn't control any important funcions I use on a regular basis.
Lenses
Panasonic was the third company to join the L-Mount consortium (Leica and Sigma being the other two) and the lens selection is slowly growing. Now we have Third Party vendors such as TTArtisan supplying new lenses (AF and Manual focus) for the system.
Who’s It For?
If you’re a hybrid shooter who values portability without compromise, the S9 is your new muse. Travel bloggers, documentarians, and even seasoned professionals looking for a lightweight second body will find it irresistible.
My Final Verdict:
A Pocket-Sized Powerhouse.
The Panasonic DC-S9 isn’t trying to be everything to everyone—and that’s its strength. It’s a deliberate, stylish tool for those who prioritize agility and creativity over sheer specs.
Complaint No 2
One other problem you will encounter is seeing the back LCD when the sun shines. It is a problem for me and I don't think I'll be the only one.
